World Coin Wall - Coin holder #1

The First Coin Holder for the World Coin Wall

As a passionate coin collector I’ve embarked on an exciting project: the World Coin Wall. This ambitious project is my way of collecting and displaying one complete set of coins from every country in the world. Each set will have its own custom-made coin holder, hopefully turning my wall into a stunning global numismatic display.

I started this project four years ago (around 2021. april), and now I’m expanding the videos I created with accompanying articles to provide even more details and insights into the process.

And what better way to start this journey than with the coins from my home country, Latvia? In this blog post, I’ll walk you through the process of creating the first coin holder for my World Coin Wall, featuring both Latvia’s Euro coins and the pre-Euro Lats coins that I grew up with. Plus, don’t forget to check out the accompanying YouTube video where I show the entire process in action!

Why Start with Latvia?

I wanted to begin this project with something personal. Being from Latvia, I have a deep connection to both the Lats and the Euro, as they represent different chapters of my country’s history. The Lats, used before Latvia adopted the Euro in 2014, hold a special place in my heart as I grew up using them. It only made sense to make the very first coin holder a tribute to the coins that shaped my life up until now.

Designing the Coin Holder

For this project, I used my preferred materials: plywood and acrylic. Each design is created from scratch, and I cut and engrave the details using a laser engraver. This allows me to ensure precision and add a unique touch to every coin holder.

The biggest challenge wasn’t actually the coin holder itself - it was designing the World Coin Wall where all the coin holders will be displayed. This process took me two full days in action and few days in planning! First, I used a projector to cast a world map onto my apartment wall. Then, I carefully traced the outline with a pencil before finalizing it with a marker. Now, each country will have a place on the wall, and I’ll gradually fill it with coin holders from around the world.

Displaying the Coin Holder

Each coin holder is a unique, standalone piece of art. While I’ll be using similar materials, every holder will have its own design, color scheme, and shape. To mount them, I’ll be using picture frame wall hooks, allowing for easy adjustments as the collection grows.

For Latvia’s coin holder, I included:

  • A full Latvian Euro coin set, including the 2 Euro, 1 Euro, and cent coins.

  • A selection of pre-Euro Lats coins, featuring iconic designs from Latvia’s past.
